La Jolla Homes
Bird Rock is an upscale coastal neighborhood located in southern La Jolla. Its namesake is a stone island about 150 feet offshore, covered in seagulls and pelicans. The area is known for its beautiful cliffside ocean views, its miniature roundabouts, and the many shops and restaurants along its main street, La Jolla Boulevard.
Bird Rock Park
There are three parks in the area: the grassy seaside Calumet Park, Bird Rock Park which offers a playground and sports field, and the tiny but scenic La Jolla Hermosa Park. While most of the coastline is rocky, the sandy Tourmaline Beach at Bird Rock’s southern border is ideal for surfing, and the local tide pools are full of hermit crabs, small fish, anemones and sea urchins. There’s plenty of great cuisine to be found in the neighborhood: you can get fresh sushi rolls at Station Sushi, succulent short ribs at Beaumont’s, delicious homemade pasta at Lupi, or a steaming cup of java at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. The active nightlife of Pacific Beach also lies just to the south.
Bird Rock School
Bird Rock Elementary is among the top schools in the county, with levels of proficiency in math and language well above the state average. Homes in Bird Rock, while still pricey, tend to be more affordable than those in the rest of La Jolla, and many offer breathtaking views of the sea. Overall, this neighborhood strikes a satisfying balance between lively commerce and coastal charm.
